The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all.
Reality kinda sucks right now. If you’re like me, you’re probably really frustrated at the fact that topics such as racism and the war in Ukraine, and global warming, and the 2020 election are still topics of discussion as if there really are two valid opposing views instead of the one obvious loving and logical viewpoint. Who could possibly be against liberty and justice for all? Am I right? You’ve probably also been paying close attention to news headlines and posting a Facebook rant every once-in-a-while. These times are exhausting, but it always helps to have a good soundtrack to get you through the stressful days.

As Unitarian Universalists, our Fourth Principle calls us to “a free and responsible search for truth and meaning.” While this sounds noble and just, what does “free and responsible” look like when put into practice—especially within our current environment of partisan politics, so-called “culture wars,” media silos, and passionate calls for social justice. This Sunday we gather, in a place called “sanctuary,” to search together—freely and responsibly.

Supporting Democracy: Refueling the Fire of Commitment
The 5th Principle of Unitarian Universalism is: The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large. In our country there is evidence of the degradation of the access to, as well as the reliability of, the democratic process. Our faith asks us to fight for and use the democratic process. There are many ways we do this but...when will it end? How can we continue this work when there's bad news every day? One answer is making room for joy and expressing our anger in music.

The inherent worth and dignity of every person.
This is a noble root for our shared religious philosophy. In recent years, I have discovered that I cannot honor the worth and dignity of others without honoring them in myself.

This sermon will explore (at least) three things: 1) Why it’s so difficult to find common ground on the issue of abortion. 2) Is there more common ground in this debate than is commonly understood? 3) Criteria by which to determine when to grant legal rights to gestational human life.
